Alfred Edward Goodwin 95, passed away on April 30, 2026 at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a very brief illness. He was born January 12, 1931 in Providence, RI to John F. Goodwin and Margaret E. (Levine) Goodwin. Al was the 7th of 9 children; John, Raymond, Norman, Margaret, Francis, Elizabeth, Alfred, Norma and Louise, all of whom predeceased him.
Al married the love of his life, Jenny, on April 11, 1953. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage until her death in 2020. Their marriage was a hallmark of love, kindness, compassion and devotion to one another as well as their strong faith. Al is survived by his daughter Christine, granddaughter Peggy and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Al was educated at Blessed Sacrament School and LaSalle Academy, class of 1949. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. After discharge he worked several jobs including the United States Postal Service as he pursued a Master's Degree in Education at Rhode Island College.
Al's entire teaching career was at Seekonk High School where he taught science and was head of the department. He also coached the girls track team.
Upon retirement he moved from Rumford, RI to become a full time resident of Little Compton. He summered in Little Compton since 1962 in Indian Rock Acres. Those summers were wondrous-swimming at South Shore Beach, walking the length of Goosewing Beach always on the hunt for sea-glass. As kids, his nieces and nephews were in awe of his body surfing ability and how he always made it to the sandy beach. During the summer he enjoyed sitting on the deck overlooking the ocean with views of South Shore, Goosewing, Horseneck, Gooseberry Island and Buzzards Bay. He knew all the names of the Elizabeth Islands. Binoculars were always near to check out cargo ships and boats.
After retirement Al kept busy as Mr. Fix-it, he was the handyman of Indian Rock Acres. He would tackle any project and was known for his meticulous work. He also prided himself on the many lawns he maintained up until he was 89.
Al will be remembered for his strong love of family, his kind gentle manner, his work ethic and honesty. Our lives were enriched by this loving man.
