James Mataronas III, of Little Compton, passed away Tuesday December 24, 2023, at home. Jim was the beloved husband of the late Margaret (Mudd) Mataronas, who passed away in 2018. He was born in Fall River, a son of the late James and Edna (Walsh) Mataronas.
In 1963 he obtained his first lobstering license. He built Sakonnet Lobster Company from the ground up, including the house and shop where he raised his family, caught, and sold lobsters, and built his lobster boat Sunny Jim. Jim’s children are involved in various ways in his life-long work at the Sakonnet Lobster Company.
He raced cars growing up and had a lot of pride in his Dodge Charger that he purchased new in 1974. Jim was a US Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1974. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and being out on the water. He was a member of the Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association and the Sakonnet Point Club.
He is survived by his five children, sons: James Mataronas IV, Gregory, Douglas, Matthew (Amanda) Mataronas and daughter Brandilyn (Christian) Cruz, a brother Gary Mataronas, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He is now with the love of his life, Margaret, whom he had been married to for 38 years.
